Divorce in Short Stories - 1142 Words

Separation and Divorce Separation- is a legal status where married couples may disentangle their finances without divorce. Divorce- is the final termination of a marriage, canceling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds of matrimony between two persons. Shoba and Shukumar, having planned a good life ahead of them had a sudden change in plans when their child had died. After that incident Shoba planned to separate from Shukumar and this did not help save their marriage. Her reasons for leaving Shukumar were because of their failure to love, communicate, and the change of roles between the two. Although, the decision of a divorce was never established it would have been for the better. Also another†¦show more content†¦Next, there is the process of separation triggered by the chain reaction of the failure at love, the loss of their, unborn, child and the exchange of gender roles. With the male staying at home, Shukumar’s laziness bec omes more and more visually defining to Shoba. Then the temptation of separation persists at Shoba as she notices how Shukumar has become. This characterization of Shukumar turns into alienation as Shoba pokes out Shukumar’s inabilities to cope. For example, Shoba leaves for work early each morning, returns late, and often brings home extra work to occupy her evenings and weekends. When Shoba is home, Shukumar retreats to his computer and pretends to work on his dissertation. He has put the computer in the room that was to be the nursery because he knows that Shoba avoids that room. She comes in briefly each evening to tell him goodnight. He resents even this brief interaction, which Shoba initiates only out of a sense of obligation. As the alienation that has been put into effect by Shukumar troubles Shoba, this turns into miscommunication. Shukumar resents any brief interaction, which Shoba does only out of obligation to get what she must say through him. This miscommunicat ion elevates to more of a common everyday topic for the couple. Also this is exemplified as one of the most common reasons for divorce as couples become unable to communicate in a normal, meaningful fashion.
